Welcome back! We hope everyone had a wonderful Spring Break!
This morning, we had quite the unexpected visitor. As the Willows entered the room, we kept hearing a bumping sound. It didn’t take long before we discovered the cause, a bird was repeatedly flying into our window!
This sparked lots of curiosity and concern. We began to wonder why the bird was doing this and what we could do to help. Was he seeing his reflection and thinking it was another bird? Could he get hurt? How could we keep him safe?
A small group of friends worked together to create a cozy “home” for him on the windowsill, hoping it might encourage him to stop. When that didn’t seem to work, we brought the question to our whole group, inviting everyone to share their ideas and help problem-solve together.
During our morning meeting our friends discussed this problem and here are some of their ideas to help our little feathered friend:
*Put paper on the outside of our windows - SB
*We made a house inside of our window, maybe we can make one for the birdie on the outside of the window? - SB and LuS
*Close the curtains and turn off the lights - LaS
*Ya, the pictures that are on the windows are making him see his reflection - MW
*Go outside and act like scary birds to shoo him away - LaS
*We don't want to scare our little pet - LuS
Then the idea arose that maybe we should name him!
So, first we went to work giving our friend a name! The children came up with Pretty Birdie, Little Bonk Bonk (because he bonks into the window, haha), and Bonky!
Winner is LITTLE BONK BONK!
Now that he has a name, we have to work on helping him!
The first theory that we tried was turning all of our lights off and closing the blinds!
That didn't work so we decided that we would head outside to work on helping Little Bonk Bonk!
The children began with working on drawings of bird houses and bird nests that could possibly help distract Little Bonk Bonk from the windows. We then made the plan to hang these drawings on the windows to help stop him from seeing his reflection.

And the children worked on hanging paper on the windows!
We can't wait to see where this will take us next! We'll keep you updated on whether or not our theories work! Hopefully we'll be able to keep Little Bonk Bonk safe!
