Our engineering minds were at work this morning!
As we have noticed the fun play that the children have done with both the magna tiles and the cars, we wondered what would happen if we put them together. We showed the children a few different pictures and videos of what a ramp with magna tiles could look like and then asked them if they wanted to try to make one too!
This small group immediately wanted to make a "two times tower", meaning they wanted the top of the ramp to be two magna tiles high! Their problem solving was absolutely amazing!!!
ES and FJ were trying to figure out how to make the ramp part work. Two magna tiles were too big for the space and one magna tile wasn't big enough. What were we to do!
ES scoured through the magna tiles until she found the perfect piece! She found the half tile and, as she said "it fits the best!"
The rest of the group followed suit and we have the coolest ramps ever!!!
A second group joined the space and decided that they wanted to make a racetrack!
They first wanted the race track to have an "exit" but then later decided that they wanted to make their track a "big circle!".
Another small group revisited our blue stove and wondered what could we add to it? To further our thinking, we thought about the stoves we have at home. GW said her stove at home had "circles on top and circles on the side." She mentioned that the circles on the side "move back and forth and switch on and off."
LS, LG, and AH said their stoves had circles on top too. We discussed how the ones on top were called "burners" and the ones on the side were called "knobs" and these turn the stove on and off. Next, we wondered how we should add the circles on top.
This group thought of paint, but we came to the conclusion that the box might not need to get wet with paint again, so we went over to the art area and decided that markers would be perfect! 4 big spirals were drawn on top for the burners!
Then, we decided that we would use a different art material for the knobs. AH thought of using paper! We drafted our circles with pencil first and then cut them out and taped them onto the side.
This group was super proud of their work! We placed it next to our pink refrigerator in the kitchen area.
