This is going to be a long blog!

Over the last couple of weeks we have been working on learning about ourselves. When children draw self portraits we get a glimpse of how the children see themselves. This also gives the child the chance to express themselves and build a sense of identity. As you know we began self portraits several weeks ago but we didn't show you their final products! So we thought we would do that first and then you will see one of the invitations we were able to create for the children once they finished their self portraits!

Once we finished our portraits we shrunk them down and put them on blocks. The children loved finding themselves! They began playing with each other, pretending to be a family, and building homes for each of their people.

So we decided to take this provocation one step further.

We worked with the children to find the letters of their name using small letter tiles.

Then today we took our names and placed them on blocks. The children each were given the opportunity to spell their name and then help glue it on a block. 

Why do that?

Well, through this exploration the children had the chance to explore with letters, recognize and take ownership of the letters in their name, create their own "home" to use in the block area, and match their names to their self portraits! 

We can't wait to see what the children do with these blocks!

This has been such a fun exploration and the children are really excited about all of the work that they have done. We are hearing children share their blocks with each other and say, "this is me" or "this is my house". They are starting to feel a sense of ownership in our room and we hope it leads to some amazing learning!

***Disclaimer: we used a hot glue gun to glue our letters onto the blocks. The children told me where they wanted to put their letters and then I put a glue dot onto their block for them to place each letter. We talked about how hot it got and we went over safety precautions before using it!
