Science and Snow Cones

Science day was a HUGE success!
The kids did such a great job picking out experiments!
Check out all of our fun!

Experiment number one was figuring out what would happen if we put a bar of Ivory soap in the microwave.
Before putting the bar of soap into the microwave we asked the kids:
What do you notice about the bar of soap?
ZW: Oh my gosh! It smells like lemon or lime.
WK: It smells like cake.
WM: It smells like lemons.
FD: It feels smooth but kind of hard.
ZG: Like a really hard cake.
JD: It's so hard you can't break it.

During the experiment we heard the children say:
FD: It's exploding! It's melting! It's coming off the plate!
ZW: It's melting into weirdness. It's like foam!
ZG: It's like a melting of weirdness, a mountain of weirdness!
JD: The foam goes straight off the wall of the microwave and it looks really fluffy.
WK: It's a mountain melting! It looks like a rhino!

After it came out of the microwave we asked how the soap had changed:
WM: It's really soft and squishy!
ZW: It's smooth, fuzzy, and like play dough.
WK: It's really hard.
ZG: Really hard cake.
FD: It's smooth like sheeps fur but kind of hard. It smells the same!
JD: It turned into little pieces
ZW: It looks like snow!

Experiment number two was observing what happened when we mixed milk, liquid water colors, and dish soap!
We talked with the children about the fat content in milk and wondered what would happen when the dish soap met the fat in the milk...
ZW: Maybe it will mix with it.
WK: It's going to get soapy!
FD: Maybe it will clean it!

We heard a lot of excited squeals as the liquid water colors quickly spread out when touched by the dish soap!
ZG: It's moving, it moving!
WK: Oh my gosh it's going all over!
JG: Woah! It's going so fast!

Experiment number three was the classic vinegar and baking soda volcano! We've done this experiment before so the kids were more excited to do it than talk about it, haha! Check it out!

JD: It looks like orange juice!
FD: Like an orange popsicle.

WK: It feels like sugar.
ZG: Let's make chocolate milk.
WM: We're making chocolate milk. We're going to use all of the colors.
WK: Yes! It's turning chocolate!

There is a fourth experiment but before we could do that we got to have delicious snow cones from the Kona Ice Truck!!! Thank you so much to our amazing PTO for doing this for us today, the children (and teachers) LOVED it!!!

Everyone got to pick their own flavor and, as you can see in the picture below, the kids were so excited to eat their snow cones!!!

Time for experiment number four! Our last and final experiment for science day was the Mentos and soda explosion experiment! We got each child their own small bottle of soda so they could each experience the excitement of this experiment!

This was such a fun day! We can't believe the week is almost over!
Tomorrow is a special treat and forest day!

Be Happy, Be Happy
Be Kind, Be Kind
