This morning began with lots of excitement! All six of our chrysalises turned into butterflies this weekend! One friend came running in and said, "it finally happened!"

WK wore his butterfly wings to school today so he had to show us how fast he could fly around the room! He said, "I'm as fast as the butterflies!"
JD checked out the empty chrysalis shells. He said, "they smell funny!"
Once we made it outside the kids started a jumping contest! They wanted to see who could jump the best. It turns out that they are all the best jumpers!
AC decided that he wanted to collect flowers for the butterflies. We learned that they drink the nectar from flowers, so naturally we wanted to give them the best food possible!!!
Other friends collected flowers to make patterns and fairy houses!
When we got back inside before lunch the children gave the butterflies the flowers that they collected. We realized that there wasn't a lot of room in the bottom of the net so we picked the very best flowers and gently placed them in the bottom of the net! We are sure that the butterflies will love them!
Since the butterflies emerged from the chrysalises over the weekend we had to figure out the how many days it took for them to come out. I told them that they all came out on Sunday, so we counted how many days we needed to add from Thursday to Sunday! They did a great job figuring it out. The caterpillars took 11 days to come out of their chrysalises!
This has been such a fun exploration! The children have truly taken care of and observed these caterpillars from the moment they came into the classroom. Tomorrow we will let them go outside. We have decided to release them into Zone 9 where we planted flowers with the hopes that someday they will drink from our flowers! Such a beautiful sentiment from very beautiful children!
