As you know we have been talking a lot about big emotions lately. This week we have been reading a book called The Color Monster. In the book there is a monster with mixed up emotions and the little girl in the book helps the monster sort through his feelings. In the end he feels a lot of love for the little girl because of all of the help that she gave him! Yesterday and today I asked the provocating question "How do you feel today?" and then put out materials for the children to draw their own color monster that expressed their feelings or feelings that they have had recently. What they made blew my mind! These friends are truly thoughtful and I can't wait to see how they continue to express themselves and their feelings!
These monster express love, shyness, anger, love, and happiness.
Today I asked the children if the colors of the monsters in the book had to express only those feelings. For example, does red only represent anger? Immediately the children said no! We then explored making monsters with colors and feelings that were different than the story. In the book yellow expressed happiness but the green monster above looks pretty happy too! This friend said, "green is happy because I love that color."
The blue one represents sad and the gray represents shy.
During meeting we shared the monsters that we have made so far!
Creating and balancing became the name of the game for these boys! Check out the amazing designs that they came up with!
WK and JG worked together on this structure, taking turns placing pieces on top of each other. They worked so carefully and slowly to make sure that it didn't fall! When it did fall they laughed so hard, it was really fun to watch!
JD said, "look I made a house." He then took it appart and began making a house for all of the wooden animals around the table. They each had their own space, especially the lion because he was the toughest lol!
We also spent some time interested in our acorns this morning. One of our friends realized that there was a crack in one of the acorns and then we just had to open it up! Once we opened one acorn we had to open them all! It became a smashing, stomping, cracking, crazy time in Willow! But we found the inside of an acorn pretty interesting!
"There's something brown on this one."
These friends worked on creating a space for the dinosaurs that they were creating. They made me leave the area so they could surprise me with their creations! I would walk away and then they would call me back over. Once I got there they all jumped out and yelled "surprise"!
