These friends love the idea of making something explode up to the sky. It all started with our small experiments using vinegar and baking soda, so today we took it up a notch! We put Mentos into cola to see what would happen. Check out our exploding experiment for the day!
First we had to put the Mentos onto strips of paper using glue dots so that we could easily put them into the soda bottle.
We had 2 bottles of cola so we worked on two strips of Mentos for each bottle. One bottle will have 14 Mentos dropped into it and one bottle will have 20 Mentos dropped into it.
Once we finished getting the Mentos strips ready we headed to our morning meeting so that we could discuss our experiment, make our own hypothesis about what might happen, and maybe even give the Mentos a taste test!
We used our senses:
See what they look like
Touch them to see what they feel like; are they soft or hard, smooth or rough
Smell them to see what they might be made of
And, of course, we had to give them a taste!
The children said that they smelled like peppermint, they were smooth, and hard.
Our taste test brought mixed reviews. Right away some of the kids yelled, "it tastes like peppermint!"
We gave the Mentos a thumbs up, thumbs down, or both if you thought they were just ok!
I asked them why we were using mint flavored Mentos?
Their answers included:
because mint is sparkly
because the mint it going to explode so big
the mint is hot
Then one friend said, "can we try the fruit kind? Maybe it will explode too."
We will be adding that to our experiment list!
We headed outside to try out our Mentos and cola experiment!
We talked about which bottle they thought would explode higher, the bottle that we put 14 Mentos in or the bottle that we put 20 Mentos in. They unanimously decided that the bottle with 20 Mentos would yield a bigger explosion! Let's see what happened!

It gave a pretty tall explosion, the children loved it!
Test 2 - 20 Mentos in a bottle of cola.
The kids were excited because they were right and this gave a bigger, higher explosion!
Then, of course, we had to check out the bottles and do some hands on exploring!
They put more Mentos into the bottle to see if anything else would happen, they shook it, and dumped it out to see what the Mentos looked like after being in the cola. One friend said, "the Mentos made all the fizz come out of the soda!"
After our experiment was over we enjoyed some time in our zone reading books, drawing, and digging for bugs!
While inside this morning two of our friends began working on writing their own stories. They brought their books outside to continue working on them. They both took their time, sounded out words together, and told beautiful stories.
As they tried to figure out how to make the letters that they needed for their stories they used an alphabet book for reference!
These friends were so excited to dig in the dirt and find whatever bugs might be hanging out under the rocks!
"We're going to make them a good home. They live in the dirt so it needs to be made out of dirt!"
