I was looking back at all of the pictures that I have taken of the children and at all of the notes that I have written and realized that there was a common theme arising. We spend quite a bit of time outside and the children are always collecting something. It might be sticks, rocks, bugs, leaves, bark, or anything else that they can find while exploring outside! There's always a child with something craddled gently in the palm of their hand excitedly wanting to share their discovery with a friend. I decided to push into that a little bit this morning and see where their interests lie!
Some friends looked at the book If Rocks Could Sing by Leslie McGuirk with me. We then looked to see if we could find any interesting rocks just like in the book!
Immediately JG noticed that there was a J on the back and he said, "that's my name!"
These two friends took a lot of interest in the book and tried to find rocks that matched what we saw in the book. In the picture on the right they are looking for a rock with holes in it because the letter H in the book stood for holes! We actually did find a rock later in the morning with holes in it and I didn't have a camera with me to capture it. They were so excited though!
The scales were a big hit this morning also. There are a lot of rocks on the placescape from the rock river and the cave so the kids had fun bringing over different size rocks. They tried to figure out which ones were bigger or smaller. They loved seeing the scale drop down to one side because of a heavy rock!
Of course we had to collect some nature! Friends put sticks, leaves, rocks, and pieces of bark in the their baskets and then had a chance to draw pictures of the things that they collected.
"Ms. Beth look! I found a moon rock!"
Once one friend found a moon rock we were all on the look out for moon rocks! We found some fantastic rocks this morning!
In one of the stories that we read this morning called A Rock is Lively, we heard about how ancient civilizations would draw and write with rocks. This friend decided to try that out for himself and was so excited to see that rocks did in fact write! He ran around the playscape looking for all different testing spots!

We had a wonderful day today! We can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!
