Over the last couple of weeks we have really seen the magic of nature and what it does for children. Willow friends have enjoyed all that nature has to give and today was no exception!
We headed outside to zone 9 this morning, this is the zone at the front of the school. The last time we were there JD and WK worked the entire time on making potions in a large knot on the wood and I was interested to see if they would head back to that spot today. As soon as we got to the front of the building both boys ran straight to the big log! I heard WK say to JD, "we can make our potions, hurry get some sticks." They gathered up dirt in their hands and tufts of grass. They put their ingredients into their potion bowl and began to smash them together with sticks. The whole time they talked about making a potion and feeding it to everyone!
Other friends joined and wanted to know what they were making.
ZG said, "what are you making?"
JD replied, "it's a potion. It's chicken noodle soup."
WK said, "it's bug noodle soup."
And then both boys laughed while the girls said, "ewww."
JD found some interesting growth on the side of the log. He said, "I'm getting all of the mushroom and adding it to our potion." WK replied, "ya, we have to get all of the mushrooms in there and I'll get the dirt. This is going to be sooo good!"
Here the children discuss ingredients. ZW and ZG tell WK all about the berrys that they just discovered on the bushes.
JD, ZW, and ZG started gathering berries to go in the potion. JD said, "we need nine berries to go into our potion."
Once the berries were in the potion the boys went to work smashing them into the dirt.
WK said, "it's gooey."
Their potion work went on the entire time that we were outside again. Other children joined in their play and creativity and eagerly wanted to add to the potion.
We also did some leaf rubbings. We read the book Why do leaves change color? and there were activities at the end of the book The kids wanted to try to make their own leaf rubbings! It was a fun addition to our morning!
We continued to add to our nature collage.
FD wanted draw a fall picture. This is her beautiful artwork!
We read books about bugs and fall.
And found fun ways to collect nature!
After lunch we played on this little hill and the kids had a blast collecting leaves into a pile and rolling down the hill! There's a couple of fun videos at the end, my favorite part is their laughter!
