We went to work this morning on transforming the beautiful materials in our room! We have continued to work with paper to transform it in various ways. In one space the children worked with folding, taping, cutting and creating with paper. We added colored paper to bring in our interest of color and light to the paper exploration. We asked the question Can you transform paper?
The kids learned about making cone shapes, zigzags, swirlies, and loops (the kids came up with these names).
EK spent a good part of our morning trying to make her creation stay standing. Her first creation wouldn't stand and she became a bit frustrated but she worked through the frustration and eventually made a piece that stood up!

We read a book called Snippets yesterday and in the book the little left over pieces of paper wanted to make beautiful creations with the perfectly shaped pieces of paper. This morning the children wanted to make sure that the snippets that they were creating didn't go to waste either. This friend began making a box out of paper in order to collect the snippets from the table.
This friend also took most of the morning to perfect her work. She began with creating a cone that eventually became a necklace! She worked so hard to add pieces to make it reach around her neck and hang nicely! She was so proud of herself once she was finished!
We were so lucky to have Ms. Katie visit our class and teach us about origami! The children learned how to make a dog, a rabbit, and a pig! They loved working with Ms. Katie so much!
After watching the children during the day of play yesterday we realized that they were interested in making forts. To combine the work we have been doing with the worm house and the new interest in forts we created a space for the children under a table with little animals and loose materials to create their own animal homes. We asked the question: What makes a home?
As the worked we heard the children saying things like:
EB: Oh a little house.
FD: This could be a carpet for hedgehog friends fox, turtle and snail.
AGP: Squirrels do have trees!
The children connected the homes together so the animals could be close!
This friend made the Earth out of colorful shape tiles on the light projector!
As we continue to work with paper we thought we could explore with newspaper to see what the children might create. We asked the question: What spaces and shapes can newspaper make?
This friend worked really hard to get his triangle to stand up. Eventually he was able to do it just for a few seconds, but it was very exciting none the less!
We are going to introduce some of these materials to our friends tomorrow during capers! We will see what comes next!
