“We made Playdough! We made Playdough!”

Today’s story is all about making and exploring with Playdough.  Five friends eagerly volunteered to go with the teacher to the kitchen to make some playdough. Upon our arrival we washed and dried our hands, gathered all of our ingredients and measuring tools. We looked at the recipe together and began the process.  MD said we need to put 2 cups of water in first. So, he added the water to the pan and the teacher carried the pan to the table. The friends took turns adding and stirring the ingredients.

EK looked up and said "I can see you mixing C."

SS chimed in and said "The mirror is upside down."

"No! I'm upside down" said MD.

 The friends added the very last ingredient and stirred.

MD - “It’s already looking cool. It looks like playdough.”

ZW - “I want to smell it.”

As we continued working with our mixture the friends started noticing the change in the dough.

MD - “It’s like ice cream because it’s white.”

ZW and SS - “It’s like vanilla ice cream.”

We finally finished adding all the ingredients and EK said “but we didn’t add the color.” We looked in our kitchen supplies for food coloring but could not find any in the kitchen. So, off we went back to the classroom. We stopped in the hallway between the two main doors and voted on what color we wanted our playdough to be. We voted on blue, went to our class to get it and made our way back to the kitchen.  Each friend added a drop to the mixture. They noticed the dough looked a little different before stirring.

 MD - "It looks like polka-dots."

EK - "It looks like blueberries."

ZW - "It looks like a face because it has two eyes, a nose, a forehead, a mouth and cheeks."

We stirred the color into the mixture and watched as the dough transformed.

 SS - "It looks like a wave because it's blue and it looks like a domino chain because i's a circle just like it goes around and around."

Now it was time to cook our dough.  SS said to me, we need a mixing spoon to mix the playdough. Do I get this one? he asked

EK - "Why is it like that? Really bumpy?"

CH - "It was in the oven an it's sticky."

SS - "It is hard making playdough C."

CM - "No."

SS - "Yes it is."

CM - "No it's not."

We finished making our playdough and I said to the children: the playdough is ready.

 SS was so excited and began chanting "The playdough is ready! Yeaaaa! The playdough is ready!" He picked up the rolled dough and showed it to the friends and they all began clapping and jumping with excitement!

We took our playdough back to the class and friends were very excited and could not wait to explore with the freshly made playdough.  GM, JB and FD made birdy nests with baby birds, a mommy and daddy bird and grandma and grandpa too.

As they explored with the playdough, GM asked the friends: "how did you guys make the playdough?"

SS - "We just mixed it with a mixing spoon and we added flour."

CH - "We added water."

EK - "We added powder."

ZW - "We put oil in it."

EK - "They're called ingredients."

CM - "And, we put it in the oven and then we stretched it out."

GM - "I like it!"

FD - "I really like it! It's really good!"
