Inflorescence

The children have been studying mosaics throughout the last few weeks. We examined and explored the snail on our hillside and today we decided to check out the bird sculpture at the Sculpture Park. The name of the sculpture is "Inflorescence" and is made by the same person that made our snail, Catherine Magel.

 On our way to the Sculpture Park we noticed a beautiful address sign! Kids started yelling right away, "look, look it's mosaic!"

We got to the park and asked:

What do you notice about the bird sculpture?

"It's got lots of colors."

"It has tiles like our snail."

"There's mirrors and glass."

"They make the bird beautiful."

 "This one is shiny"

 This friend sat and examined the tiles on the bird. She touched several of them and then would draw one that she liked on her paper. She found one with a flower in it and excitedly showed her friends!

 "I'm looking all around for the different colors. Look this ones a pretty blue!"

 "It's a rainbow!"

The kids worked really hard on their sketches. Some drew the bird and others drew the mosaic tiles. 

When we got back to the classroom we talked with the kids about what they saw and what they noticed. The kids were excited to share their noticings about "Inflorescence"!

"I noticed a rainbow tile."

"I saw that the bird had tiles that the snail has."

"The bird has lots of colors, it's a mosaic."

While at the Sculpture Park a woman brought over a wooly worm for the kids to see! They were so excited to look at it, touch it, and see it move around. One of our friends said, "we have to be kind to the caterpillar so we don't hurt him."

 The children were very gentle with the wooly worm, spoke very quietly to it, and allowed it to crawl where it wanted protecting it along the way!

We had friends draw the wooly worm also!
