Before heading into the forest today we asked the children if they thought there would be shadows in the forest. Many children yelled, "yes!" while one child said, "there has to be sun in the forest for us to see shadows." I then asked if he thought there was going to be sun in the forest. He thought for a moment, looked around and said, "it is sunny today, there might be shadows in the forest." As we headed into the forest I could see children looking around. Two children were holding hands and said, "I think there's sun in the forest, we might see shadows!"
As we continued to make our way into the forest children immediately noticed their own shadows. One friend moved back and forth from areas that were dark and light! He was laughing and when another friend joined him he said, "look my shadow disappears!" They then jumped back and forth together making their shadow disappear.
And then I noticed AGP moving slowly in the sunlight, watching her shadow carefully. She looked up at me and said, "my shadow is moving. I found sunlight so my shadow is moving in the sunlight." She then leaned down and touched her shadow gently, tilted her head to the side while looking at it. She picked up a stick next to her shadow and started to draw around the edges of her shadow. She then said, "there is treasure in my shadow" and started to dig. She pulled little twigs and rocks out from the areas that she was digging in and piled them up like little shadow treasures! Another friend came over and asked her what she was doing. She said that she was finding treasures and asked if she could look in his shadow. He stood for a little bit allowing her to dig where his shadow lay on the ground. It was very sweet of him to patiently wait as she found her treasures. Once he was ready to leave AGP went back to digging in her shadow. She did this for quite some time and had a lovely treasure pile at then end!
