We have a friend that is very interested in worms. He looks for worms quite a bit on the playscape and the other children have noticed. Today we went out a little bit early in order to beat the heat and immediately GU went worm hunting! He looked up at me and said, "I find worms" and then ran straight to the rocks. He flipped over a couple of rocks, unfortunately there were no worms. He looked a little sad until another friend came over to see what he was up to!
SS walked up to GU and said, "What are you doing?"
GU replied, "worms."
SS said, "oh I want to look for worms! Let's find some!"
CH joined the group after hearing them talk about worms and said, "I want to find worms too!"
The three friends went to work flipping over rocks and search through the mud, grass, or dirt underneath to hopefully unearth a very squiggly worm!
After searching for quite some time I heard a delighted high pitched squeal and then SS exclaim, "we found bugs!"
GU dropped the rock that he had been looking under and ran enthusiastically to see what SS had found. He said, "you find worms?" SS shook his head and said, "no, but I have a snail!"
SS had found a slug. He moved it slowly around on his fingers, smiled at it and then handed it to GU.
GU was so excited to see that they had found a bug! He started to move it slowly in his hand. CH said, "be careful, don't hurt him!" GU went back to the spot that they had found the bug and gently put it back in the dirt. CH covered the bug back up with the rock and they went back to searching for worms!
And then the magical moment happened! SS and CH both found worms hidden under a rock at the bottom of the rock river! SS jumped up and down, "I found one, I found one!" GU ran over, fascinated by what he saw squirming in his friends hand.
Both boys cradled the little worm (it was very tiny), smiling the biggest smiles. CH joined them with her worm (also quite small) and said, "it's a worm family."
SS said, "there's a worm daddy."
CH replied, "and a worm mommy."
SS responded, "it's a whole family!"
Once they all had a chance to hold the worms they decided to put them back under the rock as well. They wanted to keep the worm family together.
These three friends enjoyed a very enchanting moment together at the rock river. They learned about friendship, tenacity, persistence, showing curiosity, being inventive, being inquisitive, caring for living things, and so much more! These moments are to be cherished!
