Shadows
Our conversation with the children about shadows continued today. At meeting I asked the children what they KNOW about shadows?
NC: When the sun comes in the window we can have shadows.
CH: When you go outside you can make a shadow.
MD: When your body blocks the sun it makes a shadow.
Once the kids felt like they had shared what they knew about shadows we looked at the book Shadow by Suzy Lee.
This is a book of pictures with no words. The story shows a little girl that discovers shadows. As she explores with the shadows she begins to use her imagination and create a fun, exciting, imaginative story of her own. The kids loved the book, we only went through the first few pages. We will continue to delve into this book throughout the week! After our shadow story we decided to go on a shadow hunt around the neighborhood. We gave the children two iPads and let them take pictures of any interesting shadows that they saw!
Throughout the walk we heard a lot of comments about shadows!
EK: The swings make a shadow!
GM: I see plant shadows!
We noticed that our shadows were behind us on the playscape but beside us when we got to the street. I asked the children, "Why are our shadows in a different place?"
GM: They were behind us and now they are next to us!
MD: The sun is not moving. It's shining this way, we are moving so our shadows are moving.
CM: How long can our shadow be?
NC: My shadow kind of disappeared.
CM: Because we are in the shade.
What is shade?
FD: Shade is the dark that covers your body. The tree shade makes me dark right now.
Agreements
We finished working on our agreements this morning as well. The children came up with a wonderful list of ways that we can be a positive part of our classroom! Check our our agreements and go over them with your child at home!
