How do you make rice crispy treats?

As you saw in an earlier blog we decided to make rice crispy treats. The big question became "how do you make rice crispy treats?" We asked the kids and after a lot of discussion (mostly about what would make it sticky) they decided that our rice crispy treats should be made of:

Rice, Honey and Raisins!

I brought the ingredients that the kids agreed upon to school today. Before we headed to the kitchen atelier we talked about what our steps were going to be to make rice crispy treats.

Our first job was to wash our hands!

Then we needed to make the rice. The kids tasted the rice before it was cooked and didn't like it so we followed the directions on the back of the package to make rice. We used four cups of water and two cups of rice.

While we waited for our pot of water to boil we drew pictures of what we thought the rice crispy treats were going to look like.

I wondered, "how do we know when the water is boiling?"

Emmett quickly responded, "when there are bubbles!"

We checked for bubbles and when we saw big bubbles we decided to add the rice.

We watched it simmer.

We drew more pictures while we waited for the rice to cook. Some friends drew pictures of how they thought the kids in our class were going to feel when they tasted our rice crispy treats! They were pictures full of smiles!

Once the rice was ready (and cooled off) we added the honey and raisins.

We put it in a pan and quickly realized that it was not very crispy. I asked the kids why they thought it wasn't crispy. They decided that we needed to put it in the oven to bake so we did.

Once it they came out of the oven the kids noticed that it still wasn't crispy. I asked them why they thought it still wasn't crispy. Kaya said, "because it has too much honey in it." Emmett and Luke said, "because we needed rice crispy cereal!" We took it back to the room and let everyone have a taste.
